Ah, an explanation of how democracy is usurped by the EU?

Not quite. But a thread that explains how a lot of Leavers feel...

But what does it amount to?

My regrettable conclusion is: 'feelings', insecurity, paranoia, ‘othering’ and ignorance.
I say 'regrettable' because I lived in this bubble for many years and refused to see what was around me.

Suffice it to say, I've done a fair amount of soul searching in recent months.
Sigh. What a mess. I might have an early night.....

Just popped over to Pete North's online presence after his bad day yesterday.

Looks like he's drifting back to No Deal again.
But the timing speaks volumes. The legal judgement means PN will be defiantly fighting against the world even more than usual and IMO this is how it manifests in the North psychopathology.
I've noted before my theory that North Senior is actually just fighting a world he is psychogically incapable of understanding. And that Brexitism and Flexcit in particular is his chosen vehicle - all forms of authority from the local council to EU representing 'the world'.

Suffice it to say, some Leavers - allegedly "free traders" - will be masturbating over this news tonight, scarcely giving a second thought to what the detail looks like.
My slight sympathy for Pete North seems to have infected that last tweet.

No they won't.

They'll get what they said they wanted: A "rebalanced immigration policy open to the world, including to our Commonwealth friends". /1

Essentially swapping Romanians for Nigerians. Which back in 2016 prompted others to comment this would obviously cause an *increase* in immigration. /2
It was a bullshit policy designed to avoid the charge of racism and to simultaneously invoke a sense of British fairness.

It leads directly to Foges' observations.

Yet again, if Leave voters want to feel betrayed, they need look no further than their own leaders. /ends

I shouldn’t have to do this. Remainers should have listened to and understood these concerns long ago, but they didn’t so, hey-ho.
The European Union is unique in the world. Nothing like it has ever existed before.

It is what the French call a “grand projet”. In fact, it is the grandest project in human history the “ever closer union” of 600m people and 28 (27!) nation states, some very ancient.
This makes me nervous. Surely it is not unreasonable to be nervous about the most ambitious venture in human history?

Surely it is reasonable to ask hard questions about whether or not this project can be kept under democratic control and delivered safely?

According to Transparency International @TI_EU, the lobby organisation that has held the most high-level meetings at the European Commission between 2014 and 2018 is @BusinessEurope.

I often agree with @EuroBriefing as I think he & colleagues offer some of the best insights on European politics. But the below is just unthinkable. Were the UK to unilaterally revoke Art.50, I'd bet a case would be put before the ECJ to stop this from happening.
Say UK stays in the #EU under Corbyn with the clear plan of triggering #Article50 a little down the line. What would a good EU lawyer do? She (because, let's face it, it would be a she 😉) would advice the EU institutions to bring the #UK before the #ECJ.
Why? Because, as a member-state, the UK would have breached Article 4 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) which lays down something very boring called the "principle of sincere co-operation" between the EU member-states and the EU itself.

2/ Firstly: unless something *really* extraordinary happens in the next four months, the UK is leaving the EU on 29 March 2019.

That would, ordinarily, mean completely cutting all ties with the EU’s laws and institutions. But doing so overnight would be carnage and chaotic.
3/ Nobody wants chaos, and all sides want a close-ish relationship afterwards, on trade and security and loads of other stuff.

But while the UK remains within the EU, the EU can’t negotiate on trade with a part of itself. It can only start doing so AFTER March 2019. Therefore…
