At Election Verification Network conference in Washington, @RonWyden rips into voting technology vendors.

He says vendors think "they are just above the law. They are accountable to nobody. They’ve been able to hotwire the political system in certain parts of the country."
@RonWyden "We’re up against some really entrenched, powerful interests, who have really just figured out a way to be above the law," Wyden says. "There is no other way to characterize it."
Wyden announces a new, expanded version of his PAVE Act. Still requires paper ballots and RLAs, but now provides $500m for optical scanners. Govt will also pay for all RLAs.
The new PAVE Act also provides $250m for ballot-marking devices for disabled voters, but crucially, they mark up the same kind of ballots as the rest (no "separate-but-equal" issue).
Wyden slams new @EACgov chair Christy McCormick, who denied 2016 Russian hacking, calling her "singularly unsuited for the job." Calls her "a cybersecurity denier."
@EACgov Wyden says DHS, not the EAC, should be setting election security standards. Wyden's bill would let DHS issue “mandatory cybersecurity requirements for elections.”
Here's Wyden casting a vote as @jhalderm shows him how it could be hacked.
A message from @RonWyden
Here's my story about Wyden urging activists and experts to build a "grassroots juggernaut" supporting his updated PAVE Act, featuring some quotes from our brief interview: subscriber.politicopro.com/cybersecurity/…
