Something extraordinary happened to me a few days ago. A woman was parked outside the school, engine idling, creating a cloud of pollution just where the children where due to come out. I gently asked her to turn it off. "No. I'm charging my phone." Thread/

"Do you know it's illegal to keep your engine on while you're parked?"

I hope #BluePlanetLive will go large on commercial fishing tonight. Though it's by far the biggest current threat to marine life, Blue Planet 2 gave it a free pass. I'll watch with interest.
I would also like to see the BBC engage with the structural causes of environmental destruction. Given its major bias towards consumerist perspectives and consumerist non-solutions, this seems unlikely. A consistent failure of balance.
Oh dear. You clutch at any grain of environmental information, pathetically grateful that the BBC has mentioned something, even if it's only one or two sentences, and no visuals, but simultaneously furious that this meagre fare is as good as it gets.

1/ Backstory: we've been looking for dark matter for a long, long time and we haven't found it. We're pretty sure it's a particle based on the concordance of evidence from a wide variety of astrophysical environments, but we're not sure what kind of particle it is.
2/ Since we've been looking pretty hard in a couple of particle mass ranges (most notably we've been looking for dark matter particles that are heavier than a proton) and since we haven't found it, folks are starting to wonder if other dark matter masses are possible/interesting

Let me get this straight. Free speech is soooo under threat that intellectuals have formed some sort of "intellectual dark web"... that consists of sold-out packed arenas, podcasts with more listeners than most TV shows and books that hit best-seller lists—and this is "daring"?
Maybe because I'm from the Middle East. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe I have a different sensibility about "free speech under siege" looks like.
"My opinions are not universally fawned over but I get to argue them to millions who buy my books & download my podcasts" is free speech THRIVING.
FWIW, I did write my own "failings of free speech in the digital age article". There is a genuine issue that distribution of attention is becoming monopolized by a few ad-financed platforms. But Trump, not college students at Oberlin, are the president. wired.com/story/free-spe…

1) There’s a lot of BS about @nntaleb’s Black Swan, antifragility & skin in da game. Let’s take the gloves off and get into trouble.
2) When the Swan flew out, it was immediately butchered by imbeciles not understanding that you can’t predict the unpredictable.

That is the point – and an IQ filter NNT himself proly did not expect.
3) In any complex domain – life! – the Blackest Swan is always skulking around the corner. You know it’s coming, but you don’t know what where when. You can't tame what you've never even conceived of.
