I hope #BluePlanetLive will go large on commercial fishing tonight. Though it's by far the biggest current threat to marine life, Blue Planet 2 gave it a free pass. I'll watch with interest.
I would also like to see the BBC engage with the structural causes of environmental destruction. Given its major bias towards consumerist perspectives and consumerist non-solutions, this seems unlikely. A consistent failure of balance.
Oh dear. You clutch at any grain of environmental information, pathetically grateful that the BBC has mentioned something, even if it's only one or two sentences, and no visuals, but simultaneously furious that this meagre fare is as good as it gets.
The BBC has failed catastrophically on these issues, and needs to do 100x better than this if it is to regain even a shred of credibility. #BluePlanetLive
I liked the shark dancer woman, though - she is astonishing. But you come away from the programme with a broadly positive picture, despite the almost-whispered asides about the whole system going to shit. Why? Because there were NO IMAGES OF WHAT IS GOING WRONG.
Several times in the programme, a huge problem was mentioned, almost in passing. But instead of showing it, the issue was voiced over beautiful images of things looking right. The first rule of television: Show, Don't Tell.
I can only hope that someone finds their backbone, if necessary with both hands, during the next 3 programmes.
