Google (and YouTube) could conduct a systematic audit to identify all of the pathways to white supremacist content online and then replace these results/recommendations with information designed to debunk and deprogram white supremacist beliefs.
This one company could dramatically mitigate the radicalization of white supremacists online, saving lives. I bet they’ve already implemented similar measures to remove other forms of extremism from their algorithm so the methodology probably already exists.
The same goes for Facebook, Reddit Microsoft via Xbox live, and other platforms. It’s no secret where people are becoming radicalized. The problem is the lack of courage or willingness on the part of these corporations to meaningfully to act to address it.

Many indicators of well-being for black communities haven’t improved since the last generation. And if we don’t invest in newer and more innovative organizing strategies we will continue to be outflanked by the opposition.
We can’t continue to pretend a 1960’s organizing model is adequate to deal with an environment where digital ads, disinformation campaigns, decentralized threats, and big data structure the ecosystem. That means structures, coalitions, gatekeepers & strategies need to be changed.
Some of the most organized contexts can be ineffective because they’re hamstrung by bureaucracy, competition for funding, too many cooks in the kitchen, no experience with digital organizing and generational issues that prevent newer and effective strategies from being deployed.

A big part of why we see the same reductive and problematic conversations happening now as did in 2016 is none of the pundits and journalists who covered 2016 were held accountable for how their own biases and double standards undermined the national discourse.
Same thing goes for influencers on this platform. Same people (and bots) who helped get us into this mess saying the same things in bad faith about 2020 candidates and getting the same results - with no accountability. And the same algorithms amplifying that content are in place.
Not to say that there aren’t legitimate criticisms to be discussed and candidates held accountable. But the system in which that happens is structured in a way that is not going to be helpful to us. It’s a system that helped produce 2016 and can reproduce the same in 2020.

The Spanish (and then the Mexicans after independence in 1821) settled the far northern lands of New Spain/Mexico through creating land grants. Some of these were given to an individual, others to a group of families to start a village.
It took a good long while to get most of these going because the northern edge of New Mexico was also the land of the Comanches, who in the 18th century were the stronger nation.

So actually lemme do some thinking out loud on this.

My current ethical conundrum is whether I should host on First Vigil an unpublished, handwritten manifesto of a militia group that has been convicted of terrorism, but which has been entered into evidence in the public record.
There are arguments for and against hosting the document.

Arguments for:

- First Vigil is designed to bring information to light regarding white supremacist and far-right violence, and this is valid evidence.
- Information should be free.
More arguments for:

- hosting documents like this helps us see similarities to how other groups/individuals act, and helps us build cases against them.
- public record exists because of an agreed-upon morality about the transparency of the legal system in our society.

1) For some reason, folks on the right have extremely short memories when it comes to acts of right-wing political violence. This is especially the case when they are in the middle of a propaganda campaign to make "the left" look violent. A long thread with lots of pix follows.
2) Now, what many of them are actually talking about is street violence specifically. But of course, that means they're completely oblivious to their own behavior in that regard.
3) However, when it comes to a propensity for actual political violence directed at their opponents – or at victims they have targeted for various reasons – there really is a huge difference.
