This #SundayMorning we're discussing not only how the ORR under Scott Lloyd's leadership turned into the Handmaiden's Tale, but also how the Trump administration continues to value faith-based policy and religious extremism over the actual lives of women & children.

(THREAD)
(2) Scott Lloyd, former director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, is back in the news after Maddow ran a segment on the spreadsheet he used to track pregnant migrant teens in government custody and violate their rights by denying access to abortion.

(3) Anyone who knows Scott Lloyd would not be surprised by this. Before taking the helm at ORR he was an anti-abortion activist and lawyer for the Catholic organization The Knights of Columbus.

He's even penned op-eds on the evils of contraception.

(4) This anti-abortion campaign is much more than a policy decision for Scott Lloyd. A glance at his history suggests this is a personal holy crusade. And it's not just because he has 7 children. 👀

He's got all the markings of a religious hypocrite.

(5) In case you're not familiar with the scandal surrounding this spreadsheet tracking teen menstrual cycles, it's mostly old news. Rumors of it were unearthed last spring. But this is the first time we've seen it thanks to the Freedom of Information Act.

(6) It is true that the journey asylum seekers take is dangerous, but especially so for young girls who are exposed to violence and rape along the way. When they are taken into custody by the border patrol, girls aged 10 and up are given pregnancy tests.

(7) It'd be nice to believe that CBP is doing this to ensure the teens are provided proper care and support, but that doesn't seem to be the case. In fact, miscarriages in ICE custody have more than doubled under the Trump administration.

(8) Previously pregnant women were often released as soon as possible into homes of relatives or sponsors who could provide proper care. Now they are held without regard for their medical condition, often denied access to proper maternity care & vitamins.

(9) On one hand, we have Scott Lloyd denying teens, some of whom are rape victims, access to abortions under the mantle of a supposedly "pro-life" idealism. Then the same administration inflicts cruel neglect on pregnant mothers and their unborn children.

(10) These kinds of policies undercut the values these religious extremists pretend to espouse and make it clear they treat women as incubators.

The point has never been the welfare of unborn children, whose deaths they accept as collateral damage.

(11) Lloyd and his creepy spreadsheet and others like him have always lead a thinly disguised campaign to control women's bodies. And used women as vessels to carry out their dystopian, religious ideals.

Scott Lloyd now heads up the office of faith-based initiatives.
