If this is true, it's a whole new chapter to the Brexit pantomime of the absurd. Also proof positive that the Government has abandoned even the pretense of playing by the conventions of Parliament.

MPs take note: Theresa May *will* sabotage your amendments if humanly possible.
This could backfire extraordinarily badly. Some MPs, already minded to vote against MV3 because the prospect of a long extension is tantalisingly close, may be outraged by this naked attempt to subvert the centuries-old functioning of Parliament, hardening resolve against MV3.

So the net result of John Bercow's ruling drawing on precedent going back to 1604 is that Theresa May's undead Meaningful Vote has finally had garlic chucked at it and a stake through the heart... "MV3: The Unnecessary Sequel" drops off the Brexit production schedule. Or does it?
Actually, there are a whole bunch of things the Government could still do if she insists on having another crack, come what may.
1. CTRL-ALT-DEL to Parliament: prorogue this session, and start a new one. Would kill a ton of work-in-progress bills and be super controversial.
2. Put forward a motion saying that the HOC agrees to ignore its own process for the span of MV3. But that would need a majority to pass, and why would it get one if MV3 doesn't have one?
3. Get changes from the EU. (I am leaving this here for completeness.)

Urgent Question just beginning in the HOC on the procedure applicable to the Article 50 extension.
Justine Greening quite rightly calls out the Brexit Secretary for having closed the debate about extending Article 50 and then immediately voting against the motion.
In response, the Brexit Minister Kwasi Kwarteng says that he also voted the same way as the Brexit Secretary. Much backbench muttering ensured.

(Everyone knows the best way to extinguish a fire is with a big bucket of petrol.)

Dutch PM Mark Rutte tells me: 'This idea in UK Parliament they’ll get stuck in backstop for 30/40/50 years is absolutely not necessary. Nobody in his right mind would want the backstop.' Adds he's 'confident May now has all the arguments necessary to get it through parliament'.
Rutte denies suggestions May was too vague during talks with EU leaders last night: 'She was very clear, very open about what she wants from us and we put it on paper' [in the EU27 summit conclusions].
Rutte also suggested to me PM may need to forgo festive R&R: 'She'll no doubt during Xmas think about how to create that next stage of a new relationship and what the UK can do to really get kickstarting the whole discussion, of which part will be how to prevent the backstop.'

You can call it a backstop to the backstop, backstop 2, whatever, but the bottom line is that to conclude a deal the UK needs to agree to a legal text that prevents a hard border in Northern Ireland in all circumstances – and there is no fudging around that
The feeling among EU officials is they have done everything they possibly can to reach a deal. The scope and shape of the deal on the table is pretty much it. The ball is now firmly in London's court.

If you're new to #python programming, welcome aboard! I've spotted a few techniques that newcomers miss out on and thus learn more slowly.
First, and most important: install and use ipython. You will learn APIs much faster with tab completion and the ability to write foo? to see documentation for foo.

The default python interpreter will slow you down.
Second, install a linter in your editor. I suggest pyflakes for newcomers. This will catch lots of silly errors and give you fast feedback on syntax.

Python is a high level language that runs bytecode in its virtual machine.
Everything is an object.
It supports OOP up to multiple inheritance and functional programming.
Typing is polymorphic - duck typing is preferred
A Python script is a file with a name like name.py - we indent at four spaces (it matters), comments (after #) don't execute - and is typically written like:

def main(): # function
print("Hello world")

if __name__ == '__main__': # then entry point
main()
A module is a reusable script:

"""this is a docstring at the top of the module - gives help on the module"""

import this # do imports at the top

def main(): # main at top or bottom
