Based on my Twitter feed, some people seem to think ending Trump’s border emergency and reforming the NEA are alternatives to one another. They’re not. Congress should do BOTH. 1/7
Ending the current emergency is necessary, both to prevent a terrible policy from being implemented but also to send a clear signal that Trump’s declaration was an abuse of power. 2/7
But that isn’t enough. I very much doubt this will Trump’s last abuse of emergency powers, and future presidents might decide to go the same route now that Trump has set the precedent. 3/7
Under current law, it’s way too difficult for Congress to end emergency declarations, and for courts to step in when presidents declare fake emergencies. For the sake of our democracy, the NEA must be reformed. 4/7
I’ve written and spoken in many places about why Trump’s declaration is an abuse of power. My piece in today’s @WSJ is forward-looking, because there is a rare opportunity right now to enact long-term reform. It might not come again soon. 5/7 wsj.com/articles/congr…
That doesn’t mean we should abandon the fight against the current declaration. Americans should continue to push members of Congress—including Republicans—to terminate it. 6/7
The law requires Congress to meet every 6 months to consider such a vote. If the votes aren’t there to override Trump’s veto this time, we must try again in 6 months, and 6 months after that if necessary. 7/7
