Golda Meir was born in Ukraine in 1898. Her family emigrated to the United States and she lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 1906 to 1921 when she and her husband, Morris Myerson, left for Palestine where they lived in a kibbutz until the birth of Israel.
Golda Meir was 50 when she became one of the signatories of Israel’s Proclamation of Independence in Tel Aviv in 1948. She found herself close to tears remembering her schooldays when she had scanned the names of the men who signed the American Declaration of Independence.
