Late last year I travelled to Townsville, Queensland to investigate how climate change is transforming the Great Barrier Reef. With the help of scientists, I took a deep look at the impact of coral bleaching on the reef’s ecosystem and future prospects.

One of the things I was most shocked to learn is that mass coral bleaching is a modern-day phenomenon – or what could be called a symptom of climate change. The first mass bleaching event in the Great Barrier Reef took place in 1998
