I’ve fought most of my life for equality, acceptance & love. I’ve seen our province grow and change to support LGBTQ people, especially our youth.

This video documenting Jason Kenney’s anti-LGBTQ beliefs should not only shock, but outrage you. #abvote
Jason Kenney says he no longer holds these beliefs. He says it was just part of what people believed back then.

If that’s true, why haven’t his actions changed now? Why is he against GSAs, which are proven to save the lives of vulnerable LGBTQ youth?
Why are no openly LGBTQ-identified candidates running for the UCP?
Why won’t Jason Kenney go on the record and promise that if he becomes Premier he will not work to rescind or change Bill 10 & Bill 24, which are designed to ensure LGBTQ are supported and treated equally and without discrimination in our schools?
What is Jason Kenney hiding? Why is he so afraid of LGBTQ people? Why does he want to hurt our LGBTQ youth?
I fear that if Jason Kenney is elected we will see more young people take their own lives.
I fear our LGBTQ friends and family members will live in a constant state of anxiety and fear.
I fear that many of our most talented and creative people will feel like they have to leave our province to survive.
At this time of great uncertainty, I am reminded of the words of Dr. King who said:

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

Friends, now is the time we need you as allies. Speak out. Vote. Don’t be silent. #abvote

Mental health should be a prominent election issue. Why isn’t it? #abvote
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24.
In 2017, 89 youth in Alberta under the age of twenty-five died by suicide.
In 2016, there were 2,095 youth who went to an Alberta emergency department for the first time for self-injurious behaviours.

USA: Research indicates one quarter of 12-14 year olds who died by suicide were LGBT, which is very alarming.

Suicide disparity was shown to be greater for LGBT youth at younger ages.

What can we do to reduce risk?

LGBT youth who died by suicide were more likely to have mental health concerns, prior suicidality, and family problems contributing to their death.

These risk factors are often related to minority stress, which show how homophobia & transphobia create hostile environments.
Lack of social support can increase LGBT youth feeling that others do not care about them.

Homophobic & transphobic victimization can make LGBT youth feel like a burden to those around them.

The report also alleged the Principal told students that not just anyone could come in the school and present, they had to fall under the catholic mission, and referenced the KKK in comparison. #abed #ableg
The Principal told students they should be vested in protecting all minorities, not gays and lesbians.
The Principal told students they were in a catholic context (despite the board being catholic and public).

There's a great graph in the paper by Cech and Pham. This is the "workplace experience" of employees in US based STEM federal agencies. 3 = positive, 2 = neutral, 1 = negative. LGBTQ+ have a systematically worse of experience. #lgbtSTEM

I rarely make reference to religion here beyond noting the extreme hypocrisy permeating the evangelical Christian movement's support of @realDonaldTrump.

But next month @UMChurch will make a decision with far reaching implications and I feel compelled to comment.

In January 2017 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church appointed a 32 member body called the 'Commission on a Way Forward' to examine the church's official policies regarding the $LGBTQ community.

The Commission studied the issue for a year.

In March of 2018 they issued their findings. Their report was made public and handed over last year to the Council of Bishops for examination who spent weeks examining and considering its content.

I read this three times to see where the headline matched what @JoyAnnReid allegedly said. It doesn't.
My takeaway from the blog Reid excerpts & her comments is in 2006 she was a Bush supporter--along with 50% of America & many now-liberal pundits.

While I find this disappointing, I also see folks who claim to be Resistance and even left, RTing folks who were actual architects of Bush policy in 2006, like @DavidFrum & @BillKristol. Or lauding @sullydish.
And folks watch & quote @BillMaher who STILL holds these views.

Do NOT mistake these comments for endorsement. In 2006 I was a virulent critic of the Bush/Cheney administration and the Islamophobia that had taken root in American society.

I am merely saying I was more the outlier than Reid was re: these views in 2006.
