What a tragedy.

Did you know that Alberta has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the country?

Mental health should be a prominent election issue. Why isn’t it? #abvote
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24.
In 2017, 89 youth in Alberta under the age of twenty-five died by suicide.
In 2016, there were 2,095 youth who went to an Alberta emergency department for the first time for self-injurious behaviours.
The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that among adults who died by suicide, 90 per cent had experienced mental health issues in the year prior to their death.
Indigenous and LGBTQ youth are two groups of young people at much greater risk of suicide. For LGBTQ youth, family acceptance and support can be a strong protective factor.
A comprehensive approach to suicide prevention must include prevention, intervention, and postvention.

A focus on building resilience and improving mental wellness is critical in preventing and reducing youth suicide.
For LGBTQ youth, inclusive curriculum, GSAs, trusted teachers/adults, and comprehensive school policies can all help to build supportive school environments that reduce risk and build resilience.
Did you know? On March 7, 2019, the Alberta Government issued the first-ever provincial action plan for youth suicide prevention. Read it here: open.alberta.ca/publications/9… But more importantly, take action to support our youth find support and acceptance.
