Shaparak Shajarizadeh now works as a Senior Fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre.
In recent month since Shajarizadeh moved to Canada, many Iranians have been outraged by her comments on social media and her recent actions including her call for Magnitsky sanctions on Iran.
Shajarizadeh was one of the many who protested against compulsory Hijab in Iran. However, beyond that protest she has no previous background or experience in defending women's rights in Iran. Many were surprised when she was called "women's rights leader" in her recent article.
The Raoul Wallenberg Centre is led by Irwin Cotler. Mr. Cotler also serves on the advisory board of the powerful anti-Iran lobby organization in DC called United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI). unitedagainstnucleariran.com/people/irwin-c…
UANI has been the main lobby group against the nuclear agreement with Iran. Initially UANI opposed the nuclear deal signed by Obama and tried to defeat it in the US Congress.

Once they failed UANI tried to undermine the deal by pressuring companies that were considering to enter the Iranian market.

According to reports, Irwin Cotler was also a key figure advocating for removal of the Mujehedin-e-Khalq (MEK) from the list of terrorist groups in Canada/US.

I've spent a lot of time the past few days thinking abt social media + how it influences teens. My students read this article yesterday and had a great discussion about ideas that are introduced as a joke and then become discussion-worthy on social media nytimes.com/2019/03/18/tec…
One of the sticking points in their discussion was that Youtubers like Pewdiepie, who has been called out for racist and anti-semitic words, is just entertainment. They compared him and others to South Park and similar controversial TV shows from the 90s-00s.
There were a variety of opinions about whether all teens (and kids even younger) can differentiate between good and bad satire. But what most agreed on was that the level of access is so different today.
