Today's random angry outburst brought to you by comments I read in an anti-abortion thread, from men suggesting that women use abortion as a backup plan because they're "too lazy to pop a [birth control] pill".
I'm gonna skip straight past the basic stupidity of thinking an expensive and difficult to access medical procedure would be preferable to taking a tablet once a day, even to the 'laziest' of women (wtf?), and focus on the "just popping a pill" bit.
Because I'm SO tired of people talking about birth control like it's as quick and easy and harmless as taking a bloody Panadol
And I know of all the things wrong with that comment that this seems like a strange angle to focus on, but sometimes I wonder if people even realise what birth control does to a woman's body? What "just popping a pill" really entails?
And seeing as I just had my IUD replaced on Friday, the issue is still a bit raw for me (on more than one level!) so I'd like to share with those people the list of warnings that I was given prior to insertion.
Here is a list of common side effects of my IUD. Please note the word COMMON, as in many (or most) women will experience one or more (or all) of these side effects. 
There's a whole other list of See Your Doctor Immediately side effects, but these ones? These are just the This Is Your Life Now, Deal With It ones.
Choosing to (take a day off work, drive to another city, pay for the doctor's visit, pay for the IUD and) commit to five years of unpleasant, and potentially dangerous, side effects is not an easy decision for anyone.
Oh, and WHY did I choose an IUD over "just popping a pill"? Because I'm not allowed to take the Pill any more, because 15 years ago it gave me DVT, which could have killed me. Just one of the many delightful potential side effects of oral contraceptives.
MEANWHILE, condoms are cheap, easy to access, easy to use, protect against STIs as well as pregnancy, and the only side effect is slightly decreased sensation, so if anyone's too "lazy" - not to mention plain selfish - to use birth control, it's the dudes not using condoms.
