The Russia collusion hoax was driven by the same factors behind Covington Catholic hoax and so many other epic media fails: insular media easily manipulated by lefty activists, trusts lefty sources without question, reporters reinforce each other's delusions on social media.
Media keeps bragging this is the new Golden Age of Investigative Journalism, but in truth it's the golden age of grifters. It's never been easier for lefty groups to get massive coverage rolling with a few emails. Investigative journalism directed at the Left has been minimized.
If this was really the Golden Age of Investigative Journalism, every media org in America would currently be working furiously on white-hot exposes of how Fusion GPS and the Clinton campaign planted and nourished the Russia collusion story with ridiculous ease.
But of course, the media has little enthusiasm for investigating Democrats or liberal activist groups, and even less for investigating itself. They won't even give back the awards showered on their "investigative reporting" into an utter hoax, but they absolutely should.
Of course, in many ways the media IS the Democrat Party, so it went nuts for the Russia collusion hoax because it desperately wanted to believe it. A similar dynamic is at work with climate change, which young reporters have been taught all their lives to believe in.
But there are too many reporters and editors, at too many publications, to simply say "the media were all willing co-conspirators in the Russia collusion hoax." Much of the top brass was, but they weren't ALL on conference calls organizing this crap.
It's important to understand, expose, and do what we can to dismantle the hall of mirrors mainstream media has become. We need structural reform that will restore its defenses against quick and nearly effortless manipulation by influential lefty groups and the Democrat Party.
Institutional bias is certainly a big part of the problem, but institutional DECAY is a factor as well. There aren't enough people in the press asking, "Where did this story come from? Where is the proof? How much of this story is driven by bubbled blue-check social media?"
I'll give the media a free pro tip to get them started: NO activist source attempting to "shop" a story should be implicitly trusted, but left-wing groups and Democrats have proven themselves EXCEPTIONALLY untrustworthy. You need to be MORE skeptical of them.
They're exceptionally untrustworthy precisely because they've been easily manipulating the media for years. They expect to be able to get away with it. They expect to shape coverage with a few emails, background comments, Tweets, and viral videos.
Left-wing organizations are accustomed to being treated like dispassionate "experts," even when their political biases are glaringly obvious and they've been caught lying many times. They expect their press releases to become instant news events.
If the MSM really wants to restore public trust, it can start by exposing the groups that manipulate coverage behind the scenes. "Exposing" stuff is your JOB, right, reporters? Let's see some searing exposes on your contacts since 2016 with everyone pushing Russia collusion. /end
