Here are a few things you can do immediately to check your negative thoughts and depression:
1. Talk yourself out of absolutes. “It will never get better.” You don’t know that. You don’t know the future. So many situations in life are temporary. Including our thoughts
“Everyone is doing better than me.” Everyone? Really? That’s not true, especially if you have a device and internet to read this right now. Talk yourself out of absolutes

2. If you are suicidal, make a 4-pack. Here are 4 people I have to contact before I harm myself.
I know if I tried to kill myself (which I did years ago) my friends would think “if she just gave me the chance to get to her. If she had just told me I would have come.” So I give them the chance. Or my therapist. Or trained help.

Still digesting #SHA2018. One thing that came up that will probably keep digesting for a while.

Let's start: There's a huge connection between how employers treat their workers, and workplace outcomes.
This includes pay. But "how workers are treated" also means workplace conditions/safety, and my personal fave, how much of their time they spend on actual productive work vs kludging to get their job done in spite of management's failures.
When management's stingy, abusive, or just plain wastes workers' time, it causes resentment. It's shitty leadership. People won't put their best work in if YOU, the management, won't put YOUR best work in.

Meta-analyses are often used as a gold standard measure of evidence. But how much trust should you place in a meta-analysis outcome? Here are a few things you should look out for next time you read one [THREAD]
1. Don’t just check whether the authors state they followed PRISMA/MARS reporting guidelines, check whether they ACTUALLY did.

SPOILER ALERT: Very few do. The ones that do *typically* include a checklist in the supplement
2. Was the analysis protocol pre-registered? There is SO much analytical flexibility in meta-analysis, so this is a crucial point. Sometimes all it takes is a small tweak of study exclusion criteria to tip a summary effect size over the line to p = .048 (or closer to p = .05)

Here are a few things that work for me, in no particular order. I hope it helps. (Curious to hear how others deal with these very common feelings.) 1. Meditation. It not only increases base levels of clarity, concentration and equanimity, but it can provide a much-needed break 1/
..in an otherwise stressful day. You can begin your day with it (which helps make the other parts more manageable, and therefore less tiring), or use it to divide your day up. It can be like a power nap, but one where, rather than shutting down your mind, you're in fact.. 2/
..training it. If you do it before writing, it can help you get to a deeper place in a shorter time. It also helps with managing that anxiety that comes from feeling like you're not doing enough. It helps with all anxiety. 2. Find the joy again in the writing. What do I mean.. 3/
