OK, let's be clear about this. In a 2014 GE leaflet, George Eustice wrote that he had backed staying in the Single Market consistently since 1999. Meaning this is exactly what George has always wanted.

He has ridden the tiger, and is now going to try and get his own selfish way.
Here we are.
Yet here they are in the Standard making it look like it was a compromise.

It wasn't. Robert had to choose a form of Brexit, and George is literally putting forward what he has argued for since 1999.

The "closeness" is irrelevant to both Robert and George, but yet apparently it is implied this was the reason for choosing EFTA.

Sorry, this is just not true.
Lies are the reason we are where we are today, and we don't need more to get out of this mess, we need more honesty.

@DExEUgov OK, DExEU let me give you a little lesson in a little thing I like to call "Democracy".
@DExEUgov The referendum wasn't to "Leave the EU", it was to decide "whether the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union."

This is the summary of the act which gave power to the referendum.
@DExEUgov That was the law that our democratic parliament debated and gave power to. It is not for the executive to then decide that the referendum gave you any more powers than the ones the people of this country have agreed to.

OK, so this is not a fair point, @GoodwinMJ. If there is a disconnect between what the people who were pushing for one result said and what the referendum is about, then that is all on them.
The referendum wasn't to return sovereignty, neither was it to stop freedom of movement. It was about whether or not we remain members of the European Union.
The question could not be clearer. It is about membership of the European Union. Not about sovereignty and not about freedom of movement.

So the Lords voted pretty overwhelmingly (347👍, 225 👎) today that 🇬🇧 should stay in a Customs Union with 🇪🇺.

What is this going to mean?

Most obviously it makes the chances of 🇬🇧 having a Customs Union with 🇪🇺 marginally higher. That's welcome.

But I think the significance is more tactical.

First, this all depends on how the Commons reacts.

Does it try to fight back against Lords, and Withdrawal Bill drags on? Or does Govt back down, knowing there would probably be a majority in the Commons for a CU if it wanted it?

The latter looks more likely.

1. I voted to leave the EU for democracy and sovereignty and all that. That's good as far as it goes but it's no good talking about sovereignty without knowledge of its real world practical limitations. (Super boring thread)
2. We want to reclaim the power to legislate labour markets, rights and conditions of employment, we want to take back control of regulation of utilities and rethink how we do things which have no cross border implications.
3. The thing about the EU that blows goats is it seeks to legislate not for the facilitation of trade, but toward a single European statute book where methods, practices and conditions are uniform throughout. Nice idea in theory, unworkable and antidemocratic in practice.

1/ I am, and always will be a remainer, a passionate Eurofile who believes we should never have left the EU. However, over the past nine months I have concluded that our best way forward is to leave, and to join EFTA and stay in the EEA.
