Exmuslims have a special responsibility. Non-Muslims sometimes look to us for understanding what it's like to be a Muslim. Because we don't follow Islam, it's often assumed we are unbiased. So we have to be careful, choose our words responsibly. /1
When we say things like "I was taught to hate gays", we should also make it clear that not all Muslims grow up thinking this or people might assume otherwise. Many Muslims love and care for their non-Muslim friends and neighbours. /2
These are not just "bad Muslims" either. Many religious Muslims sincerely care about non-Muslims. /3
You can't judge a community by it's book but rather by its followers. /4

I have never been taught anywhere that I had to hate gays. Nobody said I had to hate Christians or Jews or Gays. Maybe this is taught in certain communities and families, but it wasn't in mine. And my entire moms family is Sunni Muslim, dads is Ismaili Muslim. /7
Some of the rulings in Sunni Islam towards gays are stone-age barbaric, and could lead to bigotry and thinking less of gays, but what I have seen in the community is a widening of tolerance. /8
Ali Dawah's video for example, at 17:38 they state that you cannot abuse gays or treat them badly just because they are gay, "this is not from the mannerisms of Islam"

I will concur that he is right. Islamic law states that if someone is gay, there has to be 4 witnesses of intercourse in order for them to be punished for it. Otherwise they cannot be. /10
It's not even the case that gays go to hell in Islam. If they have anal sex, they may or may not be punished for it, since its a private sin between them and God, similarly to a woman cheating on her husband or an unmarried couple having sex. But there's no automatic hell /11
