NEW: Labour shadow Foreign Sec @EmilyThornberry indicates Opposition will tomorrow back new Kyle-Wilson amendment on “confirmatory public ballot” on “any” Withdrawal Deal and “any” FR brought by this Government... ie not just its “deal”. “That’s going to be popular” she tells me

Up until now Labour have only backed a public vote on a “credible” deal - which it had defined as its own permanent customs union - now it appears to be backing a PV on any deal the PM manages to push through - her own, Norway, Canada, whatever...
... but this carefully drafted amendment “compromise” as Kyle and Wilson call it does not commit Labour to a PV if there is an election - its only under this Government.
NEW: no 10 source says Government has not tabled the existing May deal Withdrawal Agreement as a motion for the indicative votes... interesting.
Two ways of seeing this.

1. Process of IV fraught/ chaotic, rise above it and then retable on Thursday.

2. Support still low/ fragile... insufficiently confident to put it up against alternatives

Can’t see how Government can “attach” a confidence vote to a Meaningful Vote - fixed term Parliament Act is very prescriptive about the wording of any motion - must be “That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty’s Government.”...
Versions of this could be:
Govt promises time for a confidence motion - would need to do so if Oppo tabled one anyway.

That the Government tables a conf motion in itself - weird.

PM promises to resign if it gets voted down - not sure that will help get the votes, or be believed
FTPA - passed for one PArliament without thinking of risks of sustaining long zombified future Govt..canny Lords asked for sunrise clause. Compromise was a long forgotten review next year.

If Govt still here surely has to advocate its repeal.. having put that in 2017 manifesto,

37 Conservatives vote for Customs Union... including some ministers... 10 Labour MPs vote against it, DUP against . 5 LibDem voted against CU, 1 for, rest abstained. - That alone could see majority.

Barry Gardiner just directly argued against Labour Party Conference Policy.

He said that the public shouldn't be voting on the government's deal, even though conference policy literally says to campaign to let the public vote on the government's deal. #R4today

READ YOUR OWN POLICY! It explains why the government's deal should be put to the people. It's even quite flippant about that fact. It basically says "if the government's so sure it's what people want..."

March update on the biggest Japanese companies in the UK and what they are doing in response to Brexit (or if you prefer, global trends in the car industry, nuclear power, IT etc). There are around 1,000 companies, employing 160,000 people. 1/
1. The Fujitsu group continues to be the biggest Japanese employer in 🇬🇧(>8,300). Employee numbers have dropped by 2,000 since 2016 + further restructuring in Europe started Oct 2018, including shutting Augsburg factory in Germany 2/
Fujitsu UK MD has confirmed Fujitsu is committed to UK however, which is not surprising as it has a lot of government contracts, including for ID document recognition for post Brexit systems bbc.co.uk/news/business-… 3/

Labour is ignoring Conference policy (and the Kyle/Wilson amendment) to support only a Parliamentary vote that is designed to fail on a second referendum. (theguardian.com/politics/2019/…) /1
The original Kyle/Wilson amendment said to the PM: 'if you can't get your deal through Parliament MPs will support it if you put it to the people in a public vote.'

It gave a reason to opponents of the idea to back a public vote to avoid No Deal. /2
McDonnell is saying to the PM 'if you can get your deal through you should also put it to the people.' But who are the MPs, where is the incentive, to support that? There is none - this amendment is designed to fail. /3

Much over-excitement at Labour's recent press release. Unsurprisingly, it gives little away. There are many unanswered questions. Here's a few of them. 1/

The first part (the Labour amendment) expresses a desire for a Labour Brexit. It represents settled policy. The amendment has precious little chance of being adopted. So... the 'next steps' are more interesting. 2/
First, badged as 'doing everything in our power to prevent No Deal and oppose a damaging Tory Brexit', Lab will support the Cooper/Letwin amendment. That will be voted on this week. If it passes, it commits TM to ask for an extension if her deal is rejected on March 13. 3/

BREAKING: Jeremy Corbyn to table amendment on Labour's Brexit plans and if defeated (which it will be) will "put forward or support an amendment in favour of a public vote".
Jeremy Corbyn accuses PM of "recklessly" running down clock on Brexit. He adds: "We are committed to also putting forward or supporting an amendment in favour of a public vote to prevent a damaging Tory Brexit being forced on the country.”
Worth noting that leadership don't like the Kyle/Wilson amendment because it is seen as too supportive of the PM's Brexit plan (it basically means backing her deal in return for a referendum) so might table their own.
