Thanks @rickhasen for exposing this issue for debate. @philipbstark & @rad_atl & @OSET, please weigh in here. What is missing is the understanding that the BMD (sometimes barcoded) ballot is not a reliable source record for auditing. BMD proponents are missing that point.
Thanks to @rickhasen blog, I saw this Tweet response from Becker that he blocks me from seeing. The bill does indeed require audits---audits that CANNOT be performed according to auditing experts (and common sense.) The ballot cannot be verified by the voter = unauditable.

2/ This unauditable BMD technology is being adopted at rapid rates by counties across the country without understanding the security risks and the inability to audit the results. The nation's leading expert in post-election auditing @philipbstark says--
3/ _ @OSET report explains that there is “no way for the voter to verify what choices are actually being counted, and hence for the majority of solutions, the ballot cannot be said to be “verifiable” by the voter.” [GA new bill requires voter-verifiable ballot. ES&S cannot meet.]

They're ideologically a pretty solid match.
Spencer Frye, a progressive Democrat who works to help the homeless as a director at Habitat for Humanity, told me banks heavily lobbied for Abrams-backed bill. Vincent Fort, another progressive Dem in legislature, said the legislation was the lobbyists'' "priority bill."
Georgia was among states hit hardest by the Great Recession and the subprime housing crisis. Many Georgians wanted to see accountability and that's part of why the court case existed. Georgia's legislature -- including Stacey Abrams -- changed *the law itself* to shield banks.

In 2016, it was reported that Russian hackers had breached an Illinois voter database. It was later reported that voting machine vendor ES&S had left an Illinois voter database exposed w/o password protection. Were these incidents connected? @VickerySec nbcnews.com/news/us-news/r… 1/
