Some brief initial thoughts on *possible* - b/c it’s by no means unequivocally guaranteed by her reported wording – May resignation & Tory leadership contest.
May requires WA to pass in order to trigger her resignation, but has no majority without DUP backing.
DUP still say won’t back it, so unlikely to pass even if all Tory MPs voted for it, which they won’t.
So no WA passed, no resignation?
Tories have no majority without DUP backing, even for ordinary Parliamentary business.
Electing new leader/PM while having HoC majority might be OK, but not with no majority.
General election needed..
Unconscionable that leadership candidates be decided by vote among current crop of Tory MPs, some of whom are still Remainers squatting in Leave constituencies.
Another reason why General Election needed: to clean the Augean stables
So General Election needed ?? on at least two counts: but unthinkable that May could lead party into / through one without it getting slaughtered. Thus she should go now.
Leadership must by-pass current generation of “senior” Tories/legacy Cameroons, all of whom have (a) sat mute in Cabinet/on front bench & supported her, despite her incompetence & deception of them, MPs, Party & country, & (b) are mostly Remainers. They are complicit.
Unacceptable that membership be denied an election for Leader for the 2nd time in a row. Especially after shenanigans preceding May’s coronation. Hence further need for new MPs who will ensure Leaver on ballot going to membership.
