The Federal Register is an 82-volume assemblage of all Federal Government regulations since 1936. It now totals over 2.5 million pages. Each page is part of an order prohibiting people from doing things they want to do or compelling them to do things they don’t want to do.
The Federal Register does not count all the rules and regulations imposed at the state and local levels, which, if counted, would no doubt enormously increase the number of pages.
With so many prohibitions and compulsions, it’s amazing that people can still function. What’s not amazing is why conditions are growing progressively worse, as tens of thousand of new pages—meaning new prohibitions and new compulsions—are added each year.
These regulations are not even made by elected legislators, which would be bad enough. They are made by unelected bureaucrats.
Establishing freedom requires limiting the power to enact laws and all equivalents of laws, which is what all government regulations are, to elected legislators. Under penalty of perjury, the legislators should be made to swear they have read and understood whatever they vote for
Educated, genuine journalists should routinely read proposed laws and then question legislators about their knowledge and understanding of those proposed laws, publicly embarrassing them every time they failed to know what they were supporting.
All this would greatly limit the number of laws passed, which is precisely why it is necessary.
Until these reforms are made, our government will be an out-of-control monster. It is urgently in need of legislatively enacted rules and regulations controlling IT. IT, not the people, is the party that needs regulation and control. IT is the danger, not the people.
And it should never be forgotten that inasmuch as the government has by far the largest number and most powerful guns, and that its weapons stand behind every law and regulation it imposes, these reforms are essential GUN CONTROLS–controls on the government’s use of its guns.
