Day 2: Roncesvalles to Zubiri
It’s also BREXIT DAY!!! So you can all get in the backstop!
Let’s see if the feet work today. Hint: they won’t.
7.30 start, oh help us.
Hello woof woofs.
It’s cold this morning.
But we’ll be just fine later! :)
Amazingly, the legs aren’t sore today. This works for me.
Witchcraft in these forests but don’t worry, the Inquisition sorted it out.
This was the witchcraft clearing I bet!
This way.
I just bought the biggest Golden Delicious apple I have ever seen. Took me 20mins to eat.
Also got this because I’m a good little pilgrim.
On through Burguete. They have Hemingway stuff.
Zubiri is where we are going today.
Doggo!
More woof woofs. These ones have bells.
Anarchist pilgrim.
Still frosty.
Is it this way?
Glasses storage. Thankfully this rucksake has a million straps.
I can’t get past. Too bad. Will just have to go home instead.
I love a good dark forest.
“Wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.” Not this pilgrim. Don’t know that the dirt will ever wash off.
13km to go.
Just saw a deer in the forest. I’m going after it for dinner.
No dogs in the dog zone. Where do I complain in Spain about this?
About half way on the first main target in Pamplona.
Rule 2
And a ham sandwich.
Spectacular wood pile stacking.
Skittish dog fren who I scared off by accident.
Pretty awesome handball court, this one.
The road down and the road up.
Blue flower fren is here too.
Don’t stop walking.
I could go with this road right now. Uneven paths and scree are killing my toes.
Blocked. Have to go home again.
That elevation profile is the other way round. Scared me at first but it’s actually saying downhill for the next 8km.
See if you can pick out the peaks.
3.4km left.
Blue flower fren.
Old ruined pilgrim hostel and the view.
That view in widescreen.
This scree is nasty!
There it is!
At this stage of the day I’m not happy about bridges that go up and then down.
Okay... so the foot damage. This one looks like a new blister on the corner over the taped blister. But it’s actually the taped blister attempting to escape so that’s fine.
On the right big toe I think we just amputate. If you look closely you’ll see one on the top of the third toe too. I didn’t notice this one for ages so yeah, whatever.
First up is Milka Choco Wafer...
Then Leo for comparison...
I hate to tell you but these are basically the same chocolate bars. I was so disappointed.
I could sit here and Rule 2 all day now.
Airing the feet to hopefully clear the smell of rotting flesh.
Learning for the day: If you say té like in Irish the waiter understands. Tea like in English won’t work.
Lying awake trying to figure out my blister strategy for tomorrow. Theresa, left foot inner side of heel gets a simple plaster since she’s not a real blister point. She was an accident.
Jeremy, right foot third toe tip, gets nothing. He was just a small sack of trapped blood.
Boris, left big toe sealed, I think I might leave uncovered. Problem on the big toe is bruising instead, I think. Tempted to try a day without the insoles and trade toe pain for joint ache.
Jacob, right big toe deep exploded, is the puzzle. At the moment, I can only think of letting him fester and then cutting out the foul corruption.
Michel, right heel, not fussed. He is the least of my problems right now.
