The #PanamaPapers spurred countries to crack down on tax avoidance and claw back lost revenue. Three years later, $1.2 billion USD has been recouped. Here’s a country-by-country breakdown of that figure:
🇵🇦 Authorities told @laprensa in Panama they’d recouped $14.1 million in properties and cash as a result of ongoing investigations.
🇫🇷 France collected over $135 million in fees and penalties stemming from than 500 inspections. It’s the first time money from France has been revealed to our partner outlet @lemondefr.
🇨🇴 Colombia brought in more than $88.8 million within the first 12 months of publication. No doubt it’s gone up since wealthy citizens began disclosing their true wealth. bit.ly/2HTiAbq
🇸🇪 In Sweden, the government was also quick to react, gaining $19.2 million in the first 12 months. Last week, @svtnyheter revealed @Swedbank reportedly withheld information relating to the #PanamaPapers from U.S. authorities.

🇧🇪 Belgium also added to its tally, telling our local member @KristofClerix it had raked in $18.7 million, an extra $6.5 million since our last count.
🇪🇸 The Spanish Tax Agency (@informaticaaeat) has recovered an extra $41.4 million making $164 million since the 2016 investigation, reported by @garcirrey at @elconfidencial.
🇨🇿 Authorities in the Czech Republic have recouped $36.4 million. That’s also from our 2017 count, we’re waiting on more news
🇩🇰 In Denmark, investigations revealed $111.6 million in untaxed income; $47.5 million of taxes has been claimed so far, authorities told @hansenjohn01 from @politiken.
🇱🇹 Lithuania, a small eastern European country, pulled in $358,831 since the investigation, authorities told @s_cerniauskas.
🇦🇹 Austria collected more than $2.7 million in first-time gains, from 54 taxpayers *and* they fined two major Austrian banks. The bank cases are still in the courts – so not included in our $2.1 billion figure.
🇪🇨 Ecuadorian authorities have clawed back $84.3 million and seven people are now in prison following the Petroecuador scheme linked to the #PanamaPapers. @eluniversocom continues to report on the impact.

🇬🇧 British authorities at @HMRCgovuk are expecting a total of $252.7 million in recouped taxes following the #PanamaPapers.
🇳🇱 The Netherlands recouped more than $8.2 million as of October 2018, @Trouw reports. One case relating to the #PanamaPapers has been settled in court and several others are underway.
🇲🇽 In Mexico, authorities reported $21.5 million recouped as of 2017. Since then, they’ve reported millions more, including money recovered from our other investigations, #BahamasLeaks and #ParadisePapers. (We're not including this in our $1.2b figure.)
🇳🇿 Finally, tax authorities in New Zealand have made back $410,000 from tax assessed from 47 cases. It’s another country that *just* revealed money in the bank, so maybe there will be more to come!
Of course, this doesn’t include countries where the money is not yet recouped (Finland, Canada, etc.) or where undisclosed wealth has been identified, but no money made (India). And, some countries won’t disclose anything about what has been recouped because of the #PanamaPapers.
