Here's social spending on families from the OECD, as a percent of GDP. Do you think that the contrast between US cuts and sharp Canadian increases might have had some effect? 2/
And if we look across countries, social spending and poverty have a strong negative correlation. Maybe just giving money isn't enough; but more money for the poor does, in fact, help fight poverty 3/
