Jonathan Powell on Radio 4 making a reasonable case for a unity govt:
- Negotiations need parties who can compromise (based on his Good Friday experience)
- No sign of that capacity with May or Corbyn
- Rudd + Watson more likely to succeed
Counter arguments are
- May‘s inability to compromise more about ERG than her
- Labour has tried to plot middle course but has been rebuffed
- I think there is a decent argument that Corbyn himself has shown willingness - doesn’t seem rigidly sticking to a position
Though another argument is that Corbyn hasn’t really shown willingness, it’s more about trapping May into failure and general election than actually trying to find a deal that works.
