I see that a lot of people are claiming Trump was "only" referring to MS-13 members with the "animals" remark that's now making the rounds again.

Come on. Do you really not know how Trump's dehumanization game works at this point?

The crux of this is that the fluidity of Trump's remarks -- the fact that you can't really be sure *who* he's calling "animals" -- is *the whole point.*

This is exactly how dehumanizing language works. It's precisely what makes it a dog-whistle:

If you read the full quote, you *cannot know* who he's referring to.

The context is a discussion of MS-13, but then *he* fluidly conflates this with "people" we're "taking...out of the country," a larger category he describes as "bad."

The conflation *is itself* the statement.

One of the biggest problems people have in understanding twitter's hatemonger population in general is that people on the outside of a situation keep looking at posts divorced from context.

Like, yeah, if you look at any one single tweet in total isolation, it reads like some
clueless onlooker just stumbled blindly into an ongoing conversation and is asking basic questions (or framing bad information as questions- "but don't kittens drink blood?") and not anything to worry about.

But... that's intentional, well-practiced camouflage. You shout hateful
garbage at people all day, every day, most of them are going to block you/report it immediately. You notice what sort of posts don't get blocked, or clear the automated scan for hate speech when reported, and you model your future attacks off that.
