1. If by "legit," @mattyglesias, you mean "has a solid scientific foundation, can be measured reliably, and predicts real-world behavior and life outcomes," then the answer is... yes!

I think this calls for a THREAD on personality psychology. Extra nerdy, with citations.
2. Re: scientific foundation, early evidence for the Big Five model came from studies of natural language and psychological tests. We have thousands of words for describing personality traits, and most of these words can be categorized in terms of the Big Five.
3. This is true in American English, and in many other languages and cultures. (You sometimes see different versions of the Big Five in different cultures, but they're usually recognizable.)
4. And almost all traits from older personality models and tests can also be categorized in terms of the Big Five. This includes the traits from Eysenck, Cattell, Tellegen, Block, and, yes, also the Myers-Briggs.
5. Scientific consensus around the Big Five started emerging in the 1990s, and this led to an explosion of new research.
6. This explosion is still happening. Check out the program from the most recent Association for Research in Personality conference, or European Conference on Personality. Search for "Big Five" or "five-factor model" and browse through the abstracts.

7. Re: measurement, there are lots of reliable and valid Big Five measures out there. Some good options include the Big Five Inventory, Big Five Aspect Scales, Mini-IPIP, Big Five Mini-Markers, and NEO Personality Inventory. psdlab.uoregon.edu/measuring-the-…
8. I'm (obviously) partial to the Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2; Soto & John, 2017). It has a clear Big Five structure, provides reliable and valid scores with good agreement between self and peer ratings, and predicts psychological, social, and behavioral criteria.
9. Re: Behaviors and outcomes, people's standing on the Big Five predicts how they behave in everyday life.
10. The Big Five also predict dozens of life outcomes, from political attitudes and happiness to occupational preferences and health.
11. And this research replicates. In a new @PsychScience paper, I tried to replicate 78 trait-outcome associations involving the Big Five, and found significant support for almost 90% of them. Not perfect, but pretty good!
12. If you're up for reading a scholarly review of all this, I recommend this classic Handbook of Personality chapter by Oliver John and @hardsci.

13. If you want to take a deeper dive, @jackson_josh_ and I made an annotated bibliography with 100+ of our favorite Big Five papers.

14. If you'd prefer a podcast, I recommend the @Jedi_Counsel episode with @hardsci, or the @Ologies episode with @siminevazire.

15. And if you'd like to get feedback from a Big Five personality test, you can take the complete BFI-2 here, or take a short version of the BFI-2 (with cheeky feedback) at @FiveThirtyEight.

16. Ok, hope that was helpful. Thanks for coming to my talk, and enjoy the rest of the conference.
