The same applies to the Arab Spring. 2011 was year #1 in a 20 year transition. If this was a movie, you've only seen the first half hour.
Across the Arab speaking region, simultaneously:
- Popular uprisings
- Civil wars
- Proxy wars
- Authoritarian hysteria
- Terrorism
- Militias
- "Reforms" at the precipice
- Counter revolution
- Social contract breakage
- Economic unsustainability
- Stiff resistance & resilience
And this - this is exactly what a democratic transition looks like.
Real transitions from the depth of tyranny to democracy are never clean and orderly affairs. This is what they look like.
Yes, I've been saying this since 2012/2013. I said it again in 2014, after the Saudi/UAE-led counter revolution seemed to have turned the tide.

What a great and glorious morning and what historical news to wake up to. I'm in tears. The people of Sudan have unseated their tyrant of 30 years. Omar Bashir is no longer in power.
Omar Bashir is reportedly under house arrest. Other top regime officials are also being detained. Reminder that the entire bunch is wanted by the ICC for war crimes.
And here's a reminder that it's not over until a new civilian government chosen democratically by the people takes power. This isn't over, but it's a huge milestone and a cause to celebrate

I'm at the airport in Berlin and I'm being denied boarding by @Ryanair because I'm a refugee. I'm heading to Dublin. The Irish government website says I can travel but @Ryanair says I can't. If you love me, make some noise.
I'm waiting for a supervisor, who's obviously taking their time hoping I'll just leave or I'll miss the flight.

Over the last week, protests have erupted across #Sudan, with NISS intelligence service stations being burnt and reports of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) defending protestors in some locations. This is a developing thread for remotely monitoring the situation, h/t @trevorsnapp.
In Atbara, for example, protesters have set fire to the headquarters of ruling the National Congress Party, led by President Omar al-Bashir. There's plenty of visual evidence of the unrest, such as this video. Geolocation: 17.694190, 34.001319 (google.com/maps/place/17%…).

The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.
