There's a lot behind the Dem descent into gibbering lunacy this weekend - hardcore identity politics, radicals flexing their muscles against the establishment, desperation to change the subject from the Russia hoax - but a lot of them AGREE with Omar that 9/11 wasn't a big deal.
This is a resentment that has been simmering since the early Bush years. Many of today's Dems were raised on a diet of antiwar propaganda that told them Bush and his warmongering posse drastically overstated the threat of al-Qaeda and went too far calling 9/11 an act of war.
If you weren't old enough to be following politics in the Bush years, you may not realize how deranged Democrat propaganda became, especially after Kerry lost in 2004. They went completely off the deep end whipping up hatred for Bush and resentment of the "War on Terror."
By the time 2008 rolled around, official Democrat party ideology wasn't too far from the callous idiocy of Ilhan Omar. 9/11 was a one-off, akin to a natural disaster, a "tragedy" rather than an "atrocity," its perpetrators more like "lone wolves" that soldiers in an enemy army.
And of course, Party ideology in the Obama years rigidly insisted al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, etc. had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Islam in any way, shape, or form. They were all "tiny bands of extremists" on the "wrong side of history."
So there is a substantial number of Democrats who have been seething with the urge to relitigate 9/11 and recontextualize it as a freak incident without global significance that evil Islamophobic Republicans overreacted to: "some people did something." /end
