This morning I met with the @AFMC_e Board of Directors and am very happy to say that they have fully supported the Joint Commitment to Action on Indigenous Health.
#IndigenousHealth
#CCME2019
In doing so, the 17 medical schools have collectively committed to:
1. Rights-based approaches to building meaningful relationships with the Indigenous communities they serve as a foundation for community participation in all aspects of the med school
2. Developing specific Indigenous health goals with the Indigenous communities they serve and reporting regularly on their progress.
3. Investing in the development of a critical mass of Indigenous Faculty and Staff to lead all aspects of Indigenous medical education.
4. Dedicating sufficient resources to enable full implementation of the jointly developed Indigenous health goals.
5. Developing and implementing robust policies and processes for identifying and addressing anti-Indigenous racism.
6. Developing a safe work and learning environment for Indigenous learners, faculty and staff by supporting leadership and faculty change through professional development activities in anti-racism, cultural safety, and decolonization.
7. Admitting a school specific minimum number of First Nations, Metis and Inuit students each year using distinctions-based approaches.
8. Adding assessment of knowledge of Indigenous studies, cultural safety, anti-racism or related discipline in the consideration of admission for all candidates.
9. Developing and implementing a longitudinal Indigenous health curriculum with anti-racism and anti-colonialism as the core pedagogical approaches.
10. Developing and implementing PGME curriculum that builds on the UGME curriculum and prepares physicians for anti-racist, culturally safe independent practice.
Thank you to Lisa, Lyndsey, Linda, Barry, Darlene and Mike who worked with me on the core writing and facilitation and all of the AFMC Network on Indigenous Health for contributing. This is a major step forward we can all be proud of.
