KamehaCon brought @sailorspazz to interpret for Horikawa. When he canceled, she was assured that her expenses were still covered, so she did the right thing and volunteered to do something else to earn her keep. They assigned her to @karaedwards for the weekend, which worked out.
Part of her accommodation was transportation to and from the airport. She was worried whether she would have a ride for her 7am flight; she wanted to leave by 5:30am. I volunteered to take her, but she found her contact and they assured her she'd have a ride by 5:45.
So at 5:50am I got a frantic text from Spazz—her ride never showed. She figured she was screwed when she saw Brian Drummond catching an Uber, so she called me too. I scrammed to get her, but it was too late. She missed her flight, and they couldn't get her another at Love Field.
So she had to get a flight at DFW, which she had to pay for out of her own pocket. Was she treated this way because they didn't care about her after Horikawa canceled and they didn't need her anymore? Either way, it's yet another example of this con being a dumpster fire.
I had a feeling she shouldn't depend on them to take care of her so I offered to take her several times the night before, as many can attest. But she had faith in them to fulfill their promise bc she is that kind of person, and she didn't want me to have to wake up that early.
I'm mad at myself for not waking up anyway, not because it was my responsibility, but because I wish I could have saved her the grief. But mostly I'm furious with this con for fucking up so repeatedly and badly, and I hate that they managed to hurt one of the best people there.
Spazz was just as frustrated as all the rest of us who withdrew from the con when Vic was reinvited but she never seriously considered pulling out because she felt it was her responsibility to do everything in her power to shield Horikawa from the con drama. And we supported her.
She would probably never have complained about this on Twitter, or anywhere public, and I hope I'm not embarrassing her too much, but I don't want this one to get swept under the rug along with everything else. She deserved better. We all deserved better.
A troll, who I already blocked, doubted whether this story was true. He wondered why I didn't tag the con, and I told him it's bc I felt that would make Spazz uncomfortable. I took the screenshot of my recent calls yesterday when I made the thread and decided against using it.
Also I don't want this to get buried. Spazz had nothing but nice things to say about her experience working for Kara. It was def more low-skill work than what she was brought to the con to do, but it's not her fault there was nothing requiring her skills.

I didn't tag them bc I didn't want to complain directly on her behalf. She doesn't like to complain. idk why she didn't feel she could directly ask for reimbursement, but as you can see from our text messages above, that was my definite impression.
