The minute Pelosi even hints at impeachment, everything else that happens from that moment forward will be considered partisan. Every witness, hearing, report, all of it. Better to hold the hearings, steer the public toward demanding impeachment, and then meet their demands.
As things stand now, Trump has very little chance of reelection. But if Democrats impeach and botch the timing/circumstances, it could shift things greatly in his favor.
I think we’ll probably see impeachment at the strategically correct time. Critical mass should arrive within a month or two. But chew on this hypothetical: would you rather have no impeachment and then a democrat wins in 2020, or a botched impeachment and Trump wins in 2020?
Even if Pelosi has already decided to impeach, she wouldn’t say it out loud until after Mueller, McGahn, Bannon, Hicks, and the other key cooperators publicly testify. If she’s impeaching, they’d all have to testify anyway. Timetable wouldn’t change.
PS: those people were all just invited or subpoenaed to testify, and they all will within the next month. Also, do you really think House Democrats won’t make Don Jr etc publicly testify? These hearings will all be impeachment hearings. They just won’t be called that (yet).
And if you think House Democrats are trying to convince Trump’s base of something, no, not at all. Nothing to do with them. Trump’s base is 100% irrelevant. It always has been, and always will be, about convincing the people in the middle that Trump is a criminal who has to go.
As far as your role in this, Pelosi WANTS you yelling around about how pissed you are at her for not impeaching yet. So does Hoyer. Your loud anger helps build momentum for it. So keep yelling. But understand how these things really work.
Also, Mueller made explicitly clear in his report that he expects Trump to be criminally prosecuted the minute he’s no longer in office. SDNY will surely oblige, among others. So you’ll get your trial. And yes, Trump is going to prison when all is said and done. Guaranteed.
Again, the question at hand is not impeach vs never impeach. The question is impeach right this second vs spend the next month building a much stronger hand and then make the decision on whether to impeach.
And again, even if your plan is to impeach, you and your leadership publicly deflect the question right up until the second you’re ready to pull the trigger. It’s not something you publicly hint at today, if you think you’re going to do it a month from now.
From your responses it’s clear that many of you are too angry to consider logic, strategy, or even the fact that saying “impeachment” now vs saying it a month from now won’t speed up the impeachment process one bit. So be it. Pelosi needs you angry for this to work, and you are.
