Wood from different tree species have wildly different qualities. What works well in one climate does not necessarily suit the climate or building technique of another. Here's Hinoki, Sugi, two kinds of Spruce left out in the open for 4 years, and 8 years. Build with local wood!
Rot resistance dictates not only where we build but also how we build and even how what material we chose to coat it with. Here Two kinds of spruce was buried next to Sugi for three and a half years.
Wood from different species are also resistant/vulnerable against different species of insects, fungi, etc. Hinoki for example contains a natural oil that Japanese termites can't stand, but European Spruce contains no such oil, so it becomes an instant favorite.
Spruce which is a bad choice of material in Japan however has been used in Swedish buildings older than 800 years and still standing in good condition. Pine is used in the Norwegian Stave Churches, like this on in Heddedal from the 13th century.
If you are planning on building a home in a few years time you can test the wood you have available: get pieces of lumber from a few different species and locations that will still be in stock in a few years time, from your local wood warehouse. See which one lasts, unprotected.
To find out which species of wood your local species of termites hates the most, call local carpenters and builders, talk to the biology departments of local universities. Examine oldest buildings in your area and find out what kind of wood it is built with. Pay for local wood.
