I didn’t know I was pregnant until 4 weeks - & when I went to the doctor they were shocked that I knew so early. It’s only because I’m diabetic. My blood sugar went crazy. 6 weeks is early to know, & most people don’t. Periods are late. Bodies fluctuate. These bans are bullshit.
And yes, I’m both pro-choice and pregnant. I have the kind of body that had to see ten specialist doctors to make sure I could carry a baby without dying/going blind/having a stroke myself. It was a scary first trimester, & I wasn’t sure, for months, if I could safely do this.
This is true for so many pregnant people. To be able to be pregnant without risking your life is a lucky state of affairs and even some of my healthiest friends have had extreme complications. It’s a personal choice, and not a casual one, whether or not to carry a baby.
The stealth bans on abortion being enacted right now are making me even more furious than I was before I was pregnant, if that’s possible. Because this is a big damn deal, and it is terrifying and life-threatening, and if your body does not want to do it, it should not have to.
I am a textbook example of the kind of person who dies of pregnancy. I’m also a textbook example of the kind of person who has life threatening complications, and who has to make horrible choices. They are mine to make, and they should be.
I am really lucky. This pregnancy is going well, and I’m healthy. This has taken thousands upon thousands of dollars in Type 1 diabetic medical care, and if I didn’t have access to it, I would be having severe complications. The complications, for me, are the default.
This is all to say: abortion is legal in America, and it damn well should be. You do not know what might happen in someone’s body when it is pregnant, and it is not your place to decide what that person should do. My body has been a scary place, and I chose to do this, happily.
Not everyone gets that choice, and not everyone can have the good fortune I’ve had in this pregnancy so far. The things that can go wrong are myriad, and the kind of person who has to have an abortion after 6, 12, 18, 22 weeks? She’s a person like me. And like many of you.
That is all. For now. But every time I look at a map of states stealth banning safe, legal abortions, I am infuriated and disgusted anew.
