A story about out colonial present.
1) In January I was selected as one of the final two applicants for an assistant professorship at a dutch university.
2) They asked me to come to campus for a final interview. So basically they asked me to fly for 24 hours ( I live in Brazil)
For an interview that would last 40 minutes.
3) So I spent 2 days and 200$ getting my visa for Europe. This required, as all us ‘lower caste’ people of the earth know, bank statements, health insurance, hotel bookings, lease documents etc.
4) Since I am a stay at home dad, the primary caregiver for my son, I don’t have a work contract. This almost made it impossible getting a schengen visa.
5) After I got the visa (15 days to process) I spent about $2000 getting air tickets/hotel/train tickets for the trip.
6) My spouse is a graduate student and I am a stay at home dad so needless to say it all went on a credit card.
7) So the position I applied for was for a faculty of sustainability. Pretty ironic that they asked me to travel 30+ hours for a 45 min interview.
8) My interview was in February. Its now been 2 months since I did my 45 minute meet and greet with the search committee. I am yet to be REIMBURSED.
9) In March I was told I hadnt got the job because they felt I couldnt teach more biophysical courses.
10) So the moral of the story is: don’t apply to jobs in Europe if you are a working class academic from the majority world unless you want credit card debt over months. Also a department that is called global sustainability is really a space where white europeans find solutions
For all our problems in smart classrooms while the rest of us like living and working more activist lives should refrain from trying to enter. Lesson learned!
11) Maybe there should be a class and race option on european job search engines. Would save everyone a lot of time/money
Also the reason they rejected me is that they felt I couldn’t teach “Intro to Earth Science” courses. Interesting conclusion, considering I’ve been co-leading a transdisciplinary team of remite sensors, modelers, hydrologists, env. Scientists attempting to find cross scalar..
Solutions to climate vulnerability in the Himalayan region. Yes, I also to critical STS work. And feminist studies of science. I guess these things are mutually incompatible.
