183 years ago today at 3:30p.m., Sam Houston and the Texian army began advancing across the low land and over the ridge line (where the San Jacinto Monument is now) to a short distance from Santa Anna's camp without being detected. History was about to be made. #khou #HTownRush 
Against the advice of his officers, Santa Anna had abandoned the high ground the day before and moved his army about 200 yards east. And on April 21, 1836 he didn't post any sentries either. These mistakes allowed the Texian army the element of surprise. #khou #HTownRush
At about 4:30p.m., the Battle of San Jacinto began when the 2nd Regiment, under the command of Sidney Sherman, which was on the left of the Texian line--hit the right side of Santa Ann's line. Taken by surprise, the enemy couldn't organize and the rout was on. #khou #HTownRush

The Texians advanced quickly, crying, "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" The Battle of San Jacinto was over in about 18 minutes. As a result of the Texian victory, almost a third of what is now the United States of America eventually changed ownership.#khou #HTownRush
