The intellectual pivot of the plot was said to have been Major Saliba Daddy Mukoro, reputed to be the first officer of the Nigerian Army ever to have earned a PhD. Mukoro was a career military police officer and a trained criminologist

The coup bid itself was announced by Major Gideon Gwaza Orkar, an officer of the armoured corps. Orkar used to be an officer of the Regular Course 12 intake and was thus mates with Gen Andrew Azazi and Colonel Sambo Dasuki
