‘The World of Advertising in 1896’

Excerpts taken from the 1896 edition of “Printer’s Ink”, a journal for advertising.

Will add to this thread as I find more interesting sections.

Step One: Advertise.

Step Three: Profit.
3/

According to George Kissam & Company, you are a serious idiot if you’re not advertising on Street Cars.

These were all on consecutive pages in this book.
4/

Thought that was it?

This ones a bit sneakier, but still.... streetcars.
5/

Some really dark humor mixed throughout the book:
6/

And shameful reminders of our nation’s past:
7/

There are also some thoughts on business philosophy and strategies scattered throughout.

These are worth reading in full, especially “The Plunger Method”:
8/

This is probably the best find. Consider it the “Core Laws of Advertising”
9/

The 1896 summary of “Feminine Business Instinct”
10/

Probably could have come up with a better name for this niche journal.

For whatever reason, I imagined you enjoying this @BrentBeshore .

Keep it simple.

(Not sure how well your puns would’ve faired in 1896, @jlowin ).
Also, I did not mark up this book.

Would never deface a century old book!
14/

These streetcar ads are getting racy:
15/

Good business lesson:

“It is a little leak, but it will empty the bucket.”
16/

Can’t make this stuff up 😂😂

“She Has the Last Word”

Department stores.... STEP YOUR GAME UP

“Why live, when you can be buried decently in a gravely soil, with a marble tombstone for £5.10?”
