Meanwhile, tonight in Brooklyn Criminal Court, a young man was ordered jailed on $500 bail for *knocking on the door* of a former roommate. Last week they had a fight & was ordered to stay away. He allegedly was just trying to pick up his clothes & phone. 2 systems.
Fortunately, the Liberty Bail Fund was in night court and able to bail him out. My office gave him a metro card & he’s on his way back to his brother’s house. It’s wild to even think that he’s “lucky” he’s free, but that’s the state of things.
In January 2020, the crime he was accused of will not even be eligible for bail under the recently passed NY bail bill. Mandatory release. Seems like judges are just trying to dole out as much human caging as possible over the next 8 months.
