I know you're watching Barr testify. But in 10 mins in one courtroom just now: (1) Prosecutor asked $25k bail for elderly man who forgot some court dates. (2) An elderly man I represent remained jailed on $2500 bail. (3) Judge sentenced a young man to 6 yrs for gun possession.
While black men-young & old-get incarcerated & reincarcerated in local courtrooms every day like it's normal, a privileged white man continues to perjure himself & lie to the American people & Congress to cover up for a racist president like it's normal. None of this is normal.
What makes the real-time juxtaposition of Barr lying to Congress w/o consequences as black people are being systematically locked up in the court where I work even more perverse: Barr was an architect of mass incarceration. He thinks it's "working overall."nbcnews.com/think/opinion/…

People now getting more comfortable talking about reducing punishment for the “non, non, nons.” Non-violent, non-felony, non-sex cases. We need to get comfortable talking about violence. How incarceration for violence fails to provide Justice for the accused, survivors, & public.
It is a “fallacy that the US can achieve large-scale transformative change by changing responses [just] to non-violent offenses. That is impossible in a nation where 54% of people incarcerated in state prisons were convicted of violent crimes.”
Incarceration actually “intensifies” drivers of violence by “interrupting people’s education, rendering many homeless upon return, limiting their prospects for employment, & disrupting the social fabric that is the strongest protection against harm, even in the face of poverty.”

Cycle:

-$2.75 fare is difference btwn eating for many in NYC.
-Man arrested 2x for not paying.
-Sentenced to community service.
-Didnt show bc he couldnt afford to get there.
-Arrested for not doing community service.
-Resentenced to community service.
-Owes $240 court fees.
You can’t deter poverty w/ threat of jail. Sure community service is better than fines or jail, but to what end? What lesson is being taught? Why not redirect resources spent on policing, arrests, jail, prosecutions, staffing up community service offices to free or fairer fares?
If he doesn’t do community service this time, he’ll face up to 15 days jail on each case. Total of 30 days (20 w/ good time) on Rikers. If he doesn’t pay $240 court fees, a civil judgment will be entered, ensuring he has bad credit for 7 years.

Right now: Man stands before judge. 3d time arrested for driving on suspended license. Held since yesterday. Hands cuffed behind back. Trouble affording DMV fines. Mom in audience. Says she can pay. He's ordered back to cells til she does. This is poverty. Should not be a crime.
Now: Man arrested on 2 warrants from 2016 for not doing community service after arrests for not paying subway fare he couldnt then afford. Asked judge to just resentence him to time he served since arrest yesterday. Wouldn’t. 3 days of community service ahead. $240 in court fees.
Now: 66 y/o man whose home was invaded at 6am by warrant officers looking for someone else. Broke door. Ransacked house. Found small amt of crack. Not his. Arrested him/wife. Would’ve been released from precinct. BUT: 2 warrants from yrs ago for not paying court fees held him.
