I retweeted @HistoryHit earlier today, it being the anniversary of the death of Marcus Aurelius. No, his son, Commodus, didn't do him in, and it's thought he died of a fever at a military fort called Vindobona - modern-day Vienna.
It's actually kind of amazing what they've found underneath Vienna. The Roman Museum is top-notch - I guarantee you you'll never look at ancient plumbing the same way. No, I'm serious. Genius.
I should be clear here before a pedant strikes - that's a hypocaust (under floor heating) you're looking at, not plumbing.

Our Catuvellauni friends inhabited what is today Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire. Their 'capital' was considered to be 'Verlamion', later 'Verulamium' to the Romans and St Alban's to us lot. /2
In addition, the Catuvellauni had a number of hillforts. There's a few near me - one at Sharpenhoe Clappers, just outside of Luton, that some of you might remember. /3

I really wish public transport was better in this country. I'd love to be out wandering and exploring without having to wait several hours for a bus to get home. One that the Continent really has over us here.
Along the same lines: Man, I need a holiday.

Don't overthink it, and don't offer false platitudes. Send your note or make your call, and the person who is #mourning knows you care.

For #shiva, for #kaddish. The first week, there's a lot of people around in a #Jewish house of mourning. Then everyone goes home, and we are left alone.
Offer to go to lunch. Bring dinner. Take a walk.
Join us in shul. Kaddish that first time in services was hard.

Earlier today, when leaving my Airbnb, a mother was trying to get her young son to go talk to another mom's young daughter. The boy looked terrified, but tried to inch forward. He turned around and said, "I can't, mom. I'm not ready." She shook her head and shoved him forward.
He started getting a little louder and muttered repeatedly that he was nervous and he didn't want to talk right now. Meanwhile, the other parent and child were laughing, I guess thinking this was cute or comical. Eventually, the boy shouted, "NO, MOM!" and began to cry.

Today marks the 76th anniversary of the death of Sophie Scholl. An anti-Nazi political activist, she was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the LMU with her brother, Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine.
LMU = University of Munich.
The White Rose was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in the Third Reich led by a group of students and a professor at the University of Munich. The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign that called for active opposition to the Nazi party regime.

This is the only quiet time in the hospital. Vitals were at 4am. Shift change and blood work at 6am. Nurses are catching up on patient notes, so they're not talking. It's almost dark except for the heart monitor and the light under the door. Semi-peace before another day. 🏥💉💊
No one sleeps in hospital without medication. You feel your heart beating into the bed from tiredness. You just want to go home. Away from the sounds of other people's pain, from noise that is not your own, not familiar.

Make a decision now, no matter your age, to die at home.
Not that I am dying. Not now. But I am always reminded of when I was near-death in this same place & it's not a good memory.

Today is the anniversary of my father's death. He died on his mother's birthday.

I wish he had died sooner, because there is no rationale for suffering.
