Folks, I want to introduce you to an amazing client of mine, Kellie Green. She's one of the most genuine and unapologetic people I've ever met.

We met when I agreed to sign on as local counsel for a sexual harassment lawsuit she had filed with her lawyer, J. Christopher Belcher.
She used to be a police officer in the Pentagon Police. I'll spare the details, but she was victimized by her superiors in a manner that can only be described as horrific. She was a stellar officer, earning an Employee of the Month award.
But the harassment continued, she asserted her rights and filed a formal complaint with the EEOC.

And they fired her.

She never gave up. She punched forward. And last November, a scant few weeks before trial, we settled the case.
I should say, she settled the case. Her raw emotion before the judge, team of DoD lawyers and US attorneys gave a sneak peek of what kind of witness she'd be on the stand.

Outside the courthouse after the settlement, I asked her what she planned to do with the proceeds.
She paused for a moment, and then said "I'm going to start a nonprofit."

"What's your nonprofit going to do?"

"Our communities need help. Now I know what my mission is."
She didn't keep the money for herself. She founded Green Dolphin Street in Washington, DC. And now the organization does everything from teaching people how to read, get their GED, manage money, life coaching, yoga, fitness, and healthy lifestyle training, and also just listen.
I'm so glad our paths crossed and I was able to help her a tiny bit at the end of her years-long fight against the Department of Defense. People like Kellie get it. It's cliche to say we need to empower our communities. No: it's a requirement of citizenship.
There's a lot we can learn from Kellie and I hope you all will take some time to see her website and spare a few bucks for her.

Kellie, keep doing you.
