This whole piece on Jack Dorsey by @annawiener is great, but as a fan of well-done "verbal portraiture," I have to highlight this example. Up there with the current giants of the form @susanorlean & @taffyakner. newyorker.com/news/letter-fr…
The brilliance is not only does this capture Dorsey, but his interlocutors & the broader vibe of the moment as well. This isn't just describing how Dorsey looks but also conveying the full atmosphere and emotions of the moment. Wish I was teaching so I could show it to students.
As a fan of great a great article "kicker" as well, the conclusion is also brilliant.
Based on reading this article I have put a notification in my calendar to make sure to buy @annawiener's book, Uncanny Valley, when it is released in January 2020.
I mean, if you give me amazing verbal portraiture and a great kicker, you've got a fan for life.

The Chicago Tribune page has done us the favor of collecting every tendentious argument against Elizabeth Warren's debt cancellation in a single boneheaded editorial. chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/e…
They even include the "cancelling debt would be a slap in the face to those who paid for college rationale, which is best understood through this analysis. mcsweeneys.net/articles/putti…

Discussion of faith and religion has been a significant part of my teaching of writing and literature because these things have been central to the lives of the students, and humanistic study is interested in those experiences. It's the opposite of verboten.
Is this an Ivy League thing? I've spent most of my career in the South, teaching undergraduates (predominantly first-year students, even), and there's nothing weird about discussing these issues in context of class, even though I'm towards the left side of that chart.
Faith and belief are among the most fascinating subjects I can imagine, and teaching the humanities the thought that they might be excluded or verboten is just bizarre to me. If they're verboten, I've closed off a huge avenue of fruitful critical inquiry.

I've gone and done something really stupid, I've started to believe that Warren's plan to cancel existing debt and make college accessible going forward could actually happen. Usually I'm far more cynical about things, but I can't stop thinking about that possible future.
The more I think about it, the more I want it to happen, which makes me think about the possibilities more, which increases my desire for it to happen, etc... Deep down, I can't imagine something so smart and progressive actually coming to fruition, but I can't stop wanting it.
Last time I felt this is when I let myself start to desire the TT faculty job I'd applied for at the place I was visiting. I knew, deep down, that it could happen, but the odds weren't in my favor. By the time the decision rolled around, I was highly invested, only to be crushed.
