This drives me extremely nuts because there's a very real and deep opposition to the idea of "free college" among a cohort for whom state college was effectively free if you wanted to go.
college *was* free and the powers that be decided to make it a leveraged debt thing instead.
(it's also just like healthcare in that the discussions of the "cost" of subsidizing it assume all the graft and gouging and rent-seeking is like an essential thing that a public version will also need to pay for, instead of the stuff that a public version would kill)

A seemingly obvious thing in US foreign policy that I think a lot of people (mostly in punditry but also many actually in government) don't really understand is that other countries don't trust our intentions or believe we're operating in good faith *with good reason*
And weirdly all the debates about US "credibility" are about how willing we are to use force and not how our actions match our rhetoric
It's actually remarkable how many national fuckups can be attributed to becoming a country whose elite believes its own bullshit

For our health and happiness we should be radically pedestrianizing the entire country. Instead we'll make it illegal to walk along busy roads because billionaires don't want to share space with other humans on the way to the airport.
I don't strictly mean "closing areas off to cars," I mean places everywhere where people live and work and shop should be designed so it's pleasant and safe to walk around. This doesn't require density. It can be done without demanding the exurbs become Brooklyn.
Instead we'll make a choice to design places to accommodate driverless cars that only work correctly if they never encounter children crossing a street

The masses had been impoverished by the elites for over 35y. They had been severely impoverished for 6 Years.
The masses wanted more money for the NHS and wanted to sock it to the elites.

Wholly unsurprising to see people on the far right trying to distance themselves from the shooting in NZ. It’s all part of a pattern, though, and they’re part of it. Yes, in the UK I mean Farage, Yaxley-Lennon, Katie Hopkins, the Daily Mail and Express. BBCQT. Etc.
Anyone who met with Bannon. Anyone who approved of Zac Goldsmith’s mayoral campaign. Pretty much all the ‘bad boys of Brexit’. And of course in the US pretty much the whole Trump lot. Trump himself.
It’s the same picture. The same hate. The same fear. The same de-humanising and ‘othering’ of people. The same ‘games’ that have real consequences.
