This drives me extremely nuts because there's a very real and deep opposition to the idea of "free college" among a cohort for whom state college was effectively free if you wanted to go.
college *was* free and the powers that be decided to make it a leveraged debt thing instead.
(it's also just like healthcare in that the discussions of the "cost" of subsidizing it assume all the graft and gouging and rent-seeking is like an essential thing that a public version will also need to pay for, instead of the stuff that a public version would kill)
