A seemingly obvious thing in US foreign policy that I think a lot of people (mostly in punditry but also many actually in government) don't really understand is that other countries don't trust our intentions or believe we're operating in good faith *with good reason*
And weirdly all the debates about US "credibility" are about how willing we are to use force and not how our actions match our rhetoric
It's actually remarkable how many national fuckups can be attributed to becoming a country whose elite believes its own bullshit
