These are not minor scandals. This isn’t a deputy undersecretary taking football tickets from a lobbyist. This is a political party that, for 70 years, has at its highest levels believed itself above the law; above *democracy.*
So when some “establishment Republican” like Bill Barr goes to work for Trump and Very Serious People talk about how serious and high-minded he’ll be because of those establishment credentials, they have it exactly wrong. The GOP establishment is rotten.
I was like 11 years old when Iran-Contra broke and I understood that the same party doing Watergate and Iran-Contra within a decade was a Not Great pattern.

Lindsey Graham is one of the worst Senators; utterly disingenuous, deeply partisan, and a power-mad quisling — yet for decades the DC establishment & news media have treated him as one of the best.

I’m afraid we have to consider the possibility that covering up Iran-Contra was one of the *best* things Bill Barr has ever done.
“In retrospect, maybe we shouldn’t have confirmed the guy who covered up Iran Contra and wrote a ‘How to Cover Up Your Crimes’ memo for Trump on spec to be Trump’s Attorney General” is a hell of a breakthrough.
Right, and that is doubly weird because Poppy Bush was involved in and helped cover up Iran Contra.
