DOD has issued the report Congress now makes it put out every year by law listing civilian deaths from its operations around the world. media.defense.gov/2019/May/02/20…
This is the report the Trump admin cited to justify rescinding the Obama-era order requiring annual disclosure of civilian deaths from out-of-warzone counterterrorism airstrikes and commando raids, though this report omits CIA drone strikes. nytimes.com/2019/03/06/us/…
DOD's official civilian bystander/collateral damage numbers for 2018 are:
Iraq & Syria: 42 deaths and 7 injuries.
Afghanistan: 76 deaths and 58 injuries.
Yemen: 0 deaths and 0 injuries
Somalia: 2 deaths and 0 injuries
Libya: 0 deaths and 0 injuries
Notably DOD redid the 2017 numbers for Iraq and Syria during the big fighting of the ISIS war. In the report for 2017 last year DOD's self-reported global totals were 499 civilian deaths, but it also said it was still investigating 450 incidents. nytimes.com/2018/06/01/us/…
The revised DOD official numbers for the Iraq and Syria war theater in 2017 are:
793 deaths and 206 injuries
