I personally love that feature on Amazon and ordered more stuff than I should have otherwise.
The opportunity for Coil is to make it as convenient for customers as 1-click is.
To sign up to new homepages for content is time-consuming and inconvenient.
Another problem is that you have to trust the homepage if you use your credit card. A lot of people refrain from signing up to certain sites because of the safety aspect. The site can get hacked and your credit card details stolen.
In other words, the friction is large..
Imagine going to a news site or blog and pay a small amount to access an exclusive article. Imagine it just being 10 cents.
Imagine it taking just a couple of seconds to access the content, as quick as the click of your mouse.
No sign ups, no credit card details
that can be stolen. That’s the potential for Coil but in contrast to Amazon it can be expanded to all different type of content platforms on the internet.
News sites, blog sites, video platforms etc. Where 1-click on Amazon was just restricted to one site, Coil has
the opportunity to become a standard for these sort of micropayments of content.
Essentially, it is convenience while an opportunity to only pay for the content you wish. You can pay for one article instead of having to sign up for one month.
That’s another convenience, once you sign up for a site, cancelling it can be a problem. I remember having to make a phone call to the US to cancel my WSJ subscription. Recently. That’s inconvenience
Imagine WSJ being Coil enabled where you could purchase a single article
Another important aspect related to Coil is advertising. Since you get paid directly you don’t have to ”censor” yourself to suit certain advertisors.
This has been a really big debate about youtube where content creators gets demonitized if the content
can appear offensive. A lot of youtubers feel that they get unfairly demonitized. By being paid directly you don’t have to worry about this. This is why I believe in @CinnamonVideo as an alternative to youtube. Youtube has increased their ads as well, putting ads
in the middle of the video, which can lead to annoyance.
To conclude, I believe that something like Coil can change how we consume content we purchase.
The old business model has relied on long subscriptions, having to sign up for a month to access certain content
which has often lead to consumers getting a bunch of content they necessarily are not as interested in, with inconvenient sign up process and trusting your credit card details to a third party.
With the reduction in friction, the consumer will have more power,
having the ability to more specifically choose what content to purchase in a very quick and safe manner. Coil could become the standard for these payments. 1-click for all content platforms.
Just imagine you being on Spotify with a free account with ads between songs,
then you feel like having no ads for a while, so you access the coil enabled premium section, with no ads, where you pay a few cents per minute streaming, with just one click.
Coil the micropayment standard
