My 2 cents! Conscience is costly :), although it shouldn't be. Moreover, ESG is an amorphous term and it meaning differs from person to person. Most ESG funds are just screens on existing indices. For example, the fact that Reliance is in the index is itself a retarded thing. 1/n
What makes it tricky is that E, S, & G are 3 disparate terms and can mean a lot of things. Should an oil refiner be in an index? I'd say no, but the index provider believes so. The problem with this current form of ESG is just, screening existing indices to create a portfolio 2/n
This is a weak approach to ESG, but I'm a purist. The ideal version for is the Freedom 100 EM Index created by @Perth_Tolle. Everything else is varied shades of "greenwashing". 3/n
For all the talk about ESG, they haven't really captured the imagination of investors and taken in the assets. Even Vanguard, the 8000 pound gorilla hasn't been able to shake the space. The biggest ESG ETF is just $1.42 billion. Here are the top 10 4/n
Even the Goldman Sachs JUST U.S. Large Cap Equity ETF (JUST) ETF which is based on an index by the legendary Paul Tudor Jones hasn't taken off. Here's the flows for the ETF 5/n
The cheapest Vanguard ETF - $ESGV has also had a non-Vanguard like launch so far. Just $407 million in assets. 6/n
To put that into perspective, $VOO - the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF has has multiple days where it has seen inflows of over $2 billion in a single day. 7/n
in 2018, these ESG funds took in a RECORD $5.5 billions. So, yeah, early days in ESG land. morningstar.com/blog/2019/02/1… 8/n
If you want to get a more detailed and nuanced perspective, I'd highly recommend this episode of Trillions by the ETF Guru - @EricBalchunas
